What is Style to You?

1. The way in which something is said, done, expressed, or performed
2. A quality of imagination and individuality expressed in one's actions and tastes
3. A distinctive manner of expression
4. A distinctive manner or custom of behaving or conducting oneself

...you get the point...

To me, STYLE is limitless. Style is in everything you do or say or make. It is what makes you an individual or in fact the opposite, it makes you part of something larger that you feel fits your personality.

Living in NYC, I have seen the gamut of different styles. From working for Gucci, Barney's and Catherine Malandrino to hanging out in Tomkins Park on a summers day. There is always something interesting to see when it comes to style in fashion. I love people watching. I wish I could do it as a full time job. I just took my camera out and captured some styles in walking around in Brooklyn.

Personal style really can't be good or bad...people will of course have their opinions, but it should really only matter to you and how it makes YOU feel. How would you describe YOUR style???

The REAL Reason You Disappoint: A Letter to John Galliano

Dear John Galliano,

You must be asking yourself, "Why you?". Amidst all the Charlie Sheens and Mel Gibsons of the world, why are we most disappointed in you? You can't measure racism on a scale of 1-10. It either is. Or it isn't. But that being said, were your anti-Semitic comments really any worse than Gibson or Sheen? Well, no. So what's the deal? Why are these Hitler-praising comments more upseting coming from your mouth?

Let's take a look at the possibilities.

Could it be the hypocrisy of a gay man expressing admiration for a monster who targeted homosexuals for incarceration in concentration camps?

No.

Is it perhaps your failure to recognize that under a Hitler regime, your work would be considered degenerate art, thereby branding you an enemy of the state and forcing you into exile?

Also, no.

Is it the ingratitude towards Joan Burstein, a Jewish woman, who is credited with discovering you and putting your name on fashion's radar?

No.

Could it be the disrespect for people like Andre Leon Talley, a gay black man who ensured that your name STAYED on the radar, and who would have been persecuted if Hitler had his way?

Nope.

These reasons are certainly disturbing and full of contradictory concepts. But I believe our true disappointment comes from the notion that your entire career was built on an industry that honors beauty through experimentation. The fashion world celebrates the peculiar, the unique. It is an environment where everything that is strange and new is encouraged to flourish.

The ugliness of your comments are a jarring contrast to the splendor that you showed us on the runway, and don't reflect any of the broad-minded acceptance of the fashion industry that nurtured you. We, simply put, expected more from you.

Mr. Galliano, you have proven time and again that you are fashionable. But please... Show some style.

Fads: Yes or No?

I have lived through the 70's, 80's, and 90's and have seen many style trends come and go. I am always curious to know how fashion trends get started. Some trends seem to stick longer than others, while some really just shouldn't be classified as 'trends' because they have been around for a long time and, in my opinion, will/should never go away. I know how many 'bad' trends are out there and it would take too many photos and paragraphs for this post....so here are a few amazing fads as well as some 'questionable' ones.

Why why why? Until now, Crocs were my biggest no no for clothing/apparel. From my understanding, these toe shoes are not good for running. Also from my understanding, these shoes are just so NOT attractive. I have been seeing these on people here in NYC lately. So, the question is....why? Is it the answer for a mens ballet flat perhaps? I hope someone can enlighten me with this one. I am seriously stumped.

Drop Crotch Pants. Obviously, I am partial to these (as the photo is yours truly) The Harem pant really has been around in India for longer than any of us have been alive. As a trend however, it is fairly new to the scene. MC Hammer, unfortunately, has given the drop crotch pant a really bad rap. (no pun intended) Many people have strong opinions against these pants, especially on men. To me, they give men a different choice other than their boring normal day to day options. I think that this type of pant should stay in the muted color palate although, I didn't mind Henrik Vibskov's Drop Crotch in this color:

Shoulder Pads. I have seen every episode of The Golden Girls. Their wardrobe always consisted of pieces with added shoulder pads. All of the shoulder pad pieces in the 80's still have me baffled. Did it ever make women look better? I just see female linebackers. However, I have seen a few modern pieces with exaggerated shoulder enhancements that are quite nice. For instance:

Skinny Leg Denim. Believe it or not, I was so against getting a pair for the longest time. I have been wearing womens jeans for so many years and I always went for a nice boot cut. Why didn't anyone force me into a pair of skinny leg jeans a long time ago?? I cannot imagine not having them in my rotation. I hear women say that they hate guys in a skinny jean....I say, stop being jealous! This is not a fad, this is here to stay :)

Silly-Bandz??????????????????? I see these on more adults than children. I'm at a loss here. Please explain.

What Style Defines You? OR What is Your Definition of Style?

I am forever curious about how you make your choices with what you wear. There is so much more to it then just what you see. How did you end up with the style you adopted? Is your style constantly changing? Have you gone for the casual 'I don't really care' look? Or perhaps the 'I ALWAYS wear heels NEVER flats' look. How much thought do you put into what you wear each day? Do you just throw something on and it looks flawless or are you in your closet trying on pretty much every piece you own? I know that it has a lot to do with what mood you are in at that moment but what are the things you're trying on? Do you wear bright and bold colors or does your closet need extra lights just to see what hangs there (like mine) because everything is black? I wish I could go into everyones closet and see what they own!!! I also wish I had a closet they size of my apartment.

I am a huge fan of simple (I am a fan of a lot of things) I think she put some thought into the shoes and handbag for the dress. Also, choosing something that enhances your skin tone and hair color is crucial. There is a lot going on with the print and the ruffled detail yet it still looks easy and flawless.

This was one of my favorite looks today! Really though..she looks so confident! Clothes, accessories, hair..they all play a part in your style and there is no better compliment than confident. I see people wearing some ridiculous pieces but make them look so luxe with all the confidence they exude. The print is so great on this dress! Paired with white, it just jumps out at you! From the glasses to the shoes to the Ipod...the white accents make everything come together beautifully! Don't you just want to walk around with her?

This girl owned that dress! It was 90 degrees out and she made it seem like it was a breezy oceanside moment. Long dresses are one of my favorites (when worn well) If I was a woman, I would probably be in a long dress of some kind 50% of my days. I have definitely seen some train wrecks when it comes to longer dresses though. Keep it simple and don't over do it with accessories, let the dress speak for itself. Keep in mind your fabric choices when wearing a long dress. If you are wearing it as a daytime dress, keep it casual and less dressy. You don't want to look like you are all dressed up and nowhere to go. Make it look like wherever you are going is THE place to go!

I have a lot of friends that like to have the 'boyish' look in their weekly rotation. I am all for it. I just wish that there was just a little more thought put into it. I see a lot of REALLY casual 'boyish' looks that just aren't flattering in the least. This girl knows how to do it right. How great are those little black socks with the lace-up shoe!!!!???? You can't see her shorts but they are a cute black short with a simple button down shirt. The hat really made the look for me! So remember, throwing on a size xxl college sweatshirt and a pair of big sweatpants isn't necessarily the best sexy'boyish' look.

One dress, one handbag, one pair of shoes....One complete look! Sometimes less is more. (and better) As much as I love jewelry, this girl rocked her look without any extra help. I would like to point out that I just love pockets on dresses! Yellow is sometimes a difficult color to wear but she has it down! So simple so chic.

I truly believe that individual style has more effect on us than is ever mentioned. How we dress reflects many things in our lives. I want to start a group...we could meet once a week and just talk about how we are going to put certain pieces together or maybe discuss how to help others enhance their style. Who's in???

The Disposable Fashion Era

On many counts, I am a huge fan of companies like H&M, TopShop, Zara and Uniqlo for making peoples fashionable style choices more attainable and affordable. I know that this disposable fashion craze has become almost as fashionable as the major design house collections. Collaborations like: Thakoon for Target, Jean Paul Gaultier for Target, Sonia Rykiel for H&M, Karl Lagerfeld for H&M, Proenza Schouler for Target,Viktor & Rolf for H&M and Jil Sander for Uniqlo (just to name a few) have tried to combine Designer artistry with lower quality materials. I love the idea of it but I am just not sure that it really does anything for the brand image of these designers. Has it cheapened the passion, the hard work and dedication to fashion that these designers have spent years working on? I guess I just haven't seen any of these collective works blow me away. It really hasn't made much sense to me. Michael Kors said it best when he mentioned to the designers and viewers of Project Runway that a designer should never put their name on a t-shirt. When it comes to the designs of clothing, really...anyone can design clothes. It is not rocket science. However, there is an art to creating masterpieces that will stand the test of time. Look at Alexander McQueen, what an amazingly genius mind. The pieces that come waltzing down the runway season after season were like Degas paintings come to life. I truly believe that this 'genius' needs to stay in the place where it was meant to be. Luxury means something so different then it used to. Is it the same if I purchase a Rodarte piece from Barneys NY and a Rodarte collaboration piece from Target? I think that disposable clothing should be what it is...disposable and luxury should remain luxurious. Having said that, I want to make it clear that I really am a fan of places like TopShop, H&M and Uniqlo, as I am a fan of places like Banana Republic and J Crew. I cannot tell you how many times I have gone up to someone and said "Wow, I really love that dress"... and they reply, "Oh, I got it at Forever 21"!!!! There is definitely a place in this world for all types of fashion. I just think they should remain what they are. If you ask me, if these major Fashion Houses want to continue doing collaborations, maybe they should stick together. How about a Jean Paul Gaultier/Jil Sander collection? Or Burberry Prorsum/Vivienne Westwood collaboration? Just keeping it real :)

My own little hobby...

I shouldn't have to mention how much I appreciate fashion and style. I really fell in love with womens clothes a long time ago and mens pieces just didn't appeal to me in the same way. So what do you do when you want great pieces to wear but can't find them?? Well, you do what I did...have someone show you how to sew and make your own! Here are some of my pieces:

For all of these pieces, I didn't use any pattern other than ideas I had in my head. I still don't sew well or do things in the conventional way but I do it with love. It is nice being able to go to MOOD for fabric! I am thinking of new pieces to make for this winter. I would love to make some kind of kilt/skirt to wear. I have always liked the idea. I like to keep this Blog moving in all directions all the time. For good reasons of course, peoples personal styles are always moving in all directions. I am not sure why and how it started but what people wear is so fascinating to me. I think it is because I have been dressing people for almost half of my life. I just wish I could get in their heads when they make their choices. I walk around the streets of New York and take photos of the outcome. Here are some from the last couple of days. enjoy.

I have noticed a definite change in everyones choices lately. Maybe it's because F/W collections inspire the creative juices to kick it up a notch. Maybe it's because we are getting closer to Fashion Week. Whatever the reason, I am looking forward to see everyone in their best as the weather take a turn in that chilly direction.

Kickin' it old Skull...

Skulls in jewelry have always been associated with Rock and Roll. Over the years though, it seems skulls have made their way into the main stream of luxury goods. I know what you're thinking...skulls have been around in accessories for a long time. As this may be true, it hasn't been accepted as much in the major fashion houses as it has been lately. Skulls have been a fascination with me ever since I could remember. Maybe it had to do with being brought up listening to KISS. Whatever the case...I have always and probably will always love skulls. Is there anyone else who shares my enthusiasm for the skeletal beauty of skulls?

Things I advise NOT to do if you are a guy...

As you know, style is something that can be made up of many factors. I have said it again and again that my comments, photos and opinions are subjected here to help people see other possibilities of fashion and personal style. However, there are just some things that need to be blunt and to the point. Whether it's personal hygiene, grooming, clothes or other, I have strong ideas of what NOT to do.

Guys, I realize (being male) that when you sit down, your knees automatically want to gravitate in opposite directions (like opposing magnets) But, I have faith in you to be a bit more conscience of posture and sitting etiquette . It just isn't very becoming.

Grooming 101. Genetics can sometimes be a cruel thing. When it comes to hair, it seems everyone always wants the type of hair they DON'T have. You spend hundreds and thousands of dollars trying to re-structure you hair into art. I am all for it! There is something to be said about wanting to have your hair match the rest of your style. Go see a professional for some advise. In every town , hair salons are everywhere. If you can do it yourself, excellent and good for you...if you can't..I promise you there ARE options.

sigh... I feel some things just shouldn't have to be told or mentioned. We know that it is hot outside, we feel your pain. But the rest of us suffer that pain quietly and with our clothes worn in the correct manner. Be respectful to your clothes...they deserve your respect.

If you have long hair...well I'm jealous. I miss my long hair. I had ponytails all the time. I am a huge fan! But please no big cloth scrunchies . Enough said.

It's bad enough that men have very few options when it comes to clothes. For shirts, we have t-shirts and button downs. Since it is so limited, you should hone in on the good ones and make them work for you. Remember, your clothes should highlight YOU not the other way around.

I hope that I help people understand the art of style...and it really is an art. It takes some people a very long time to realize it. And, that is ok...as long as you do realize it. Mirrors were invented for us to use. Get a few of them. Make sure to view yourself 360 degrees before you leave.

I am so interested in why and how people choose their style. Why do you like certain designers and not others? Why do we like trends? It is really an interesting subject if you dive deep into it. I realize some things are obvious...like your environment, friends and status. I know that a lot of people (me included) dress differently at work versus their private life. I get frustrated sometimes when I see someone who could have done SO MUCH more with their daily style but chose not to. I get this way because I know how clothes can give you a positive start to your day or put a nice strut in your walk. Others choose their style to stand out and be an individual where some choose to dress like their friends with the newest latest trends. Trends are cool, but it gets annoying when you see the same thing everywhere you go. Usually a trend is something that is pre-determined by designers and fashion houses. For instance, how every designer will use one particular color incorporated into that seasons collections or a military feel or well....anything. I have no problem with that although, I like to veer away from trends. When the things that I wear start becoming a trend...it is time to change :)

What is YOUR style? Do you go for the casual "i don't care about fashion" look...uggs, oversized sweatpants and a t-shirt you had in college? Maybe, a conservative crisp button down, pencil skirt and a pointy toe kitten heel. Or, vintage everything? Rock and Roll? Goth? I see it all here in the city. As much as we like to rip on everyones style...it's still THEIR style and they made a conscience decision to pick it. I find it fascinating!

I would love to sit down with every person I take a photo of and ask them how and why they choose what they're going to wear that day. And on that note, I wish I could dress everyone. Not that what they are wearing is wrong, I just see a potential to be EXCELLENT rather than just OK. Again, personal style is just fascinating to me.

HISTORY

Animal prints have long been a popular style for many reasons. For one, they are generally expensive and considered rather exotic: hence they are a symbol of wealth and status. Throughout history, kings and other high people have used animal print rugs and such as a sign of status just as mounted animals are kept as trophies. Animal print became popular for women in the United States in the late 1960's during the Hippie Movement.

Yesterday, I was having a conversation about Leopard Prints and how it seems to have stuck around. I don't necessarily dislike the print, I just feel that it has lost it's luster. I wish it was used in a more subtle way...to make it more luxurious. I see it so much, I feel it has become a staple in peoples general rotation.

You will definitely see the "Panthera Pardus" (leopard) print again for the Autumn/Winter 2010 collections across the world.

I was thinking that the reason I started this blog was to help people find their style (or help perfect it) My last post was really about what NOT to wear (ever) on a daily basis. I wanted to elaborate on that and give some tips on what you could do in place of those nasty rubber flip flops or crocs. If you are going to wear a dress, flip flops don't really do much for the complete look. They aren't the worst thing you can wear with a dress, but it leaves a lot to be desired. For instance:

I truly believe the girl on the right got up in the morning and chose this dress because she thought it was cute. My question is, did she put on the dress and just stop thinking about everything else? She has her nice handbag, cute bracelets, but then she put on the yellow flip flops? Look at her friend to the left. Her friend chose sandals that worked well with her handbag. The browns really help pull out the red and purple in her dress. My intention isn't to trash talk this girl, my goal is to help everyone understand style a little better. There aren't really any RIGHT or WRONG choices when you get dressed...just GOOD or BAD :)

Instead of the yellow flip flops, Staying within the same 'idea', I might have picked something like this for her:

Sometimes I get all up in arms at women. It is just envy I'm sure. I look at what people are wearing head to toe everyday. It sounds creepy, but it is quite innocent I assure you. One thing I notice a lot are the shoes women wear with the rest of their ensemble. It baffles me to think that EVERY women doesn't want to dress like it's the last day...but I understand there are obstacles that have to be addressed....like work, weather and comfort. I get it, but I have never heard a women say that she doesn't want to look GREAT! This brings me back to my first thought, of why I get all up in arms at them. I have said it before and I will say it again and again...I know that shopping for clothes and such can get rather expensive. However, I know that if given the chance, no..the privilege to take advantage of all the choices women have, I would be spectacular! In my opinion, there are definitely shoes that should never be worn for fashion. Let's run down the list:

A. Uggs

I realize I will be offending many on this one. I know that it's a huge trend, but I feel like people buy and wear them because they don't know any better. A lot of times I see certain things over and over again, and wonder how that ever became the 'Cool' thing to wear. Let's move on to the next trend please. Uggs are done. We can come up with something better, no?

B. Wedge Flip Flops

Sigh. I feel like I shouldn't even have to write about these. I remember when I was around 6 or 7 seeing ladies walk around (awkwardly) in these. This isn't one of those retro things that was cool back then and has made a huge comeback in the fashion world. Ladies!...this isn't cool. I promise you, there isn't anything you can wear these with to make them a really good looking shoe. It is bad enough that there are the regular flip flops out there on feet. Poor feet. There are designers out there that have made huge strides to bring you good quality fashionable sandals so your beautiful feet wouldn't have to settle for a rubber flip flop...let alone THIS:

C. Crocs

I know that they are supposedly good for your feet (especially if you stand all day) and trust me, I stand for at least 9 hours straight, 5 days a week. I would love for my back not to hurt at the end of the day. I see Doctors and Nurses wearing them along with their scrubs..that's fine...but , somewhere somehow, someone crossed the fashion line. It is like an epidemic. how did we let this happen? I would like to start a petition to have them become illegal to wear unless you are in the medical field or work for the government. And now I see little kids wearing them because their parents think it's alright. I mean really, who started THIS?

Now that I have had my time to rant about what should NOT be worn, I would like to post some shoes that I would DEFINITELY wear if I was a women. I know that to some people, there are other, more important things in life than a beautiful expensive shoe. I did not grow up with expensive things, so I do understand. My point is, that as a woman, you have the opportunity to take advantage of these beautiful things. I see it in your eyes when you try them on. It is wonderful, it is fascinating, it is true magic. Remember: You don't always have to spend a lot of money to look great. Inexpensive yet beautiful shoes are out there I promise you. It starts with thinking outside of the box and putting pieces together for a great look that makes you feel amazing.

It is ok to love the expensive luxury pieces but buy the less expensive version. 8 out of 10 times, no one will even notice.

I sometimes think what it was like walking the streets in other cities that I have lived in.

White with black is really nice when done correctly.

I have seen so many summer scarves lately! From small to extra massive...scarves find their way around your neck even in the hottest of days.

It is great when men take pride in their accessories.

If you wear color.....go all out!

Great hair is just as important as the dress and the shoes...all 3 done very well here.

If only I could get paid to shop all day. Love the heels mixed with casual touches. Very Girly.

The Psychology of Shopping

   Shopping. What makes you buy what you buy? What makes you wear what you wear? Why did you choose the style you have adopted?
   It doesn't always have to do with being a product of your environment. If that was the case, I would be using a can of Aquanet hairspray on my huge hair, wearing snakeskin cowboy boots with bleached jeans... (still)
   There are deep psychological reasons why and how you choose your style. Most adapt a particular style from their favorite movie stars or musicians. Every style has already been created for you. It is that 'inner' you that has to figure out which style fits you the best.
   I have always said that I feel like I am a step ahead of the fashion trends. That doesn't mean I have better style, taste or that 'I' created them...Lord knows I didn't. It just happens that the particular things I have worn ironically become one of the new hot trends. Pretty much all of my life, people have made fun of me and my appearance...then the next year, everyone seemed to have caught on and then they want to befriend me. It is really an amazing phenomenon. Now that I am older, things haven't changed much. However, now the clothes I wear and how I choose to wear them are caught in a time lapse. Besides consisting of mostly, if not All black and dark colors, my style is almost non-existing in a sense. I find that other things stand out when I don't let my clothes do the talking for me. My personality and my attitude for example. Please, do not get me wrong, I LOVE clothes, especially for women. I wish I could be more comfortable in more colors, fabrics and designs. My point is this.... people choose their styles for reasons you may not see or understand right away. You might be wondering why I am bringing this up. Well, someone recently asked me why I wanted to change peoples style. They thought that I wanted them to go out a buy the designers/pieces I wear. That couldn't be further from the truth. I must admit, I am completely beside myself when it comes to the designers and designs that I love. I would like to think that I stepped outside of the box...but that is for me. The purpose for this Blog is to help educate, inspire and guide those who are having a difficult time with their style in this beautifully, materialistic fashionable world we live in.
   A lot of people can't afford the expensive luxury pieces they see in the latest Vogue or Elle. There are alternatives. Trust me. SO many times I compliment people on something they are wearing or a piece of jewelry and they say."Oh its from Forever 21!" You don't always have to spend all of your money on the top designers. You just have to be creative. People are extremely judgmental (I know I am at times), so they will criticize your choices. That's why I started this blog. There are a select few of us who care. We want to help you shop. Help you choose your next dress, handbag or pair of shoes...expensive or not. So, let's go. Let's do this. Be comfortable in your skin...then be comfortable in your clothes.

Who do you know that DOESN'T have a tattoo? Since I have a body full, the topic festers often. I never really viewed them as a 'FASHION' statement, but getting a tattoo seems to have evolved into more than just a memory saved forever.

Some facts that you may or may not have known:

~ The first recorded tattoo is believed to have been found on a mummified iceman in 3300 BC. He had 58 tattoos, mostly dots and lines.

The tattooed right hand of a Chiribaya mummy is displayed at El Algarrobal Museum.

~ To celebrate Barbies 50th birthday MAttel comes out with the new "Totally Stylin' Barbie. Complete with a set of placeable tattoos, one a lower back tattoo featuring the name 'KEN'. awesome.

~ Thomas Edison had 5 dots tattooed on his left forearm, similar to the dots on dice.

~ In 2010 Chanel will unveil its new line of fashionable temporary tattoos. The set of 55 tattoos sells for $75.

One thing in this world that I truly love is PEOPLE. It's not always about what they are wearing, but how they carry themselves. People have so much to offer. You know that feeling when you finally get that new handbag you've been salivating over for months? Or the new heels you couldn't live without? Well, watching people all day gives me that same feeling. Somehow, we are all connected (but that is a story for another day) It's not that I enjoy criticizing people, It's that I enjoy learning from them. Enjoy.

Keeping it basic and simple sometimes makes the boldest statement about yourself.

Whatever you choose to wear, let it pull out your inner attitude and you won't go wrong.

I adore the long sleeves on her dress. Just because it is hot out doesn't mean you can't pull it off.

You can be Rock and Roll in a casual way. Love the denim.

Unlike men, women have unlimited choices when it comes to what they wear. From disposable to luxury, endless possibilities are readily available. I have had this 'conversation' many many many times where people think that men have just as many options as women. No one has yet to enlighten me. When I am talking about this with women, they say, "Men have it so easy, I wish I could just throw something on and be comfortable". Well, I understand that, but I ask them..."so you would give up all the colors, fabrics, styles, designs, dresses, skirts, heels, handbags, jewelry"? Their answer is ALWAYS no. I don't blame them, I wouldn't give it up either. That's why it is my passion, no, my mission to help men get to a better 'style' place in life.
I take candid photos of everyday passer-bys to view and comment on what they are wearing. Some will be fashionable and some will be a big disaster. This is to help people know that someone is always looking at their style and maybe help another person understand how to do things differently. Clothes make people feel good. Clothes give you a sense of pride. Let's face it clothes just make the world a better place. You don't have to spend a lot of money to look amazing. It just takes a little thought and understanding to put things together that make you look and feel great...and trust me, people WILL notice. Even before I knew or understood anything about fashion, I heard people discuss how fashion trends always come back around. I love when a style or design makes a 'comeback'. For some, certain styles never go IN or OUT. We see a lot of things that were hot in the 60's and 70's. The 80's have been trying to creep back, but for some reason it just never sticks. What if we all just wore robes? It would be amazing if the entire world started dressing like the Elizabethan era. HOT!!!

If I may, I would like to reflect on one of my favorite men's (and now womens! check out his SILENT collection) designers. If I could encourage just one guy to wear one of his pieces, my goal would be met and I could sleep at night. Well...perhaps get more sleep. enjoy.

Damir Doma

The Croatian-born designer grew up in Germany and studied fashion in Munich and Berlin, where he graduated in 2004 withmagna cum laude for the best collection.

The young designer then went to Antwerp, where he worked for Raf Simons and Dirk Schoenberger. It was his time spent at Raf Simons in particular that broadened and shaped Doma's perception of fashion and the arts. Under Simon's mentorship, the creation of his personal aesthetics was kindled; leading him to infuse soulfulness and sensitivity into his work.

In 2006, Doma launched his own label; and it was not long before he made a promising debut at Paris fashion week after presenting his first collection in June 2007. A strong following has ensued since, and one that has translated into commercial success in boutiques around the world too.

His collections to date, with layered sheer fabrics, and draped silhouettes, veer towards a thoughtful and complex sensibility.

Among his sources of inspiration, Doma lists emotions, nature and artists such as Gottfried Helnwein, Joseph Beuys and Gerhard Richter.

Paradoxically, Doma, with his quiet quest for a fleeting serenity and his creations of subtle and layered looks, somehow seeks tranquillity through a kind of gentle transgression.

His clothes just feel good. Damir, if you ever read this, I would love to meet you in person. If just to shake your hand and say my thanks.

I have been spending a lot of time looking at fashion/style blogs from around the world lately. It's just amazing the difference in styles between the US and countries across the oceans. Blogs like Thesartorialist.blogspot.com and lefashionimage.blogspot.com show how creative people can be with their style. Not just their clothes, but there hair style, jewelry and handbags (individualism just spewing out of them). I walked around the streets of the city today, meandering in and out of Soho, the Meatpacking District, Chelsea, 5th Ave and Williamsburg looking to get some great candid shots of people showing off their unique styles! This is what I saw:

I am considering taking a few very short trips to perhaps, Amsterdam, Iceland and/or London just so I can be surrounded by people who really care about how they look. If anyone would like to join me, please let me know.

A Giant Leap for (MAN)Kind

I people watch everyday. If I could get paid to do it, it would be a dream. Unfortunately, it usually only pays in disappointment. Disappointment in mens fashion. I used to think it was the designers fault for not creating something worthy of a womans' closet. However, it is really men that will not take the risk of expressing themselves with elegant fabrics, creative architectural designs and forward thinking. Men have basics...button downs, suits, t-shirts, khaki shorts and sneakers. When a guy wants to go out to shop for that 'new' cool piece, he ends up buying some sort of PLAID shirt. All of the insanely brilliant designers usually incorporate plaid into their collections because they know that is what men will wear. Is there no other alternative? Is there never going to be a change? Men need to know and understand that there IS more to mens style than the status quo. We could make the changes quietly and slowly, as to not make a fuss. Do not be afraid...jump in and breath it in. Men...welcome to the world of fashion.

I like the skinny leg denim. I think it's great that men have embraced them. To make this look a little more stylish, I would change the sneakers to a nice leather shoe like these:

There is nothing wrong with what this guy is wearing, I would just like to see more men take it a little further.

This guy has the right idea. skinny black jean, comfortable but cool shoes and a vest. I am not the vest wearing type, but I love it when guys pull it off. Unfortunately, his style doesn't go with his friends'.

This guy looks great, but if he came to me and asked me to help him with his wardrobe, I would probably have him wear these shorts:

Granted, I do not want to push 'MY' style onto anyone. I just want to push 'STYLE' onto everyone. I think these shorts are edgy and masculine. You could take away the black leggings and boots, pair it with a short sleeve white button down and Bed Stu shoes and the whole thing becomes creative!
